A simple, standalone video player for Windows.
Camtasia Player is a very simple video player that provides no configuration options and is able to play only a single format.
As a result, Camtasia Player boasts a minimal interface that helps it serve the purpose of opening AVI files on the go. The main window displays the video control buttons exclusively, such as play, pause, stop, forward and rewind, as well as a simple volume control slider.
Since it's only capable of playing AVI files, Camtasia Player has no configuration screen, which means that what you see is what you get and nothing can be changed after launching the app.
Additionally, Camtasia Player supports a full-screen mode to watch the AVI files in full screen, but also a “Repeat” function to re-play the same clip several times automatically.
As you can see, the app is pretty basic and that's also the reason why it doesn't feature a help file, meaning that beginners should have absolutely no problem when trying to figure out how to use it.
In fact, opening an AVI file using the built-in “Open” tool is the only thing to do when launching Camtasia Player, so there's no chance to get lost in the interface.
Obviously, it runs on very low hardware resources and works flawlessly on all Windows versions, of course without the need for administrator privileges on Windows 7.
Overall, Camtasia Player is a very basic video player that does just one thing: it plays AVI files and nothing more. Users may be disappointed with such a limited functionality, especially since the market is already full of comprehensive tools capable of handling all video formats.

A file with the CAMREC file extension is a Camtasia Studio Screen Recording file that was created by versions of Camtasia Studio prior to 8.4.0. Newer iterations of the software replace CAMREC files with TREC files in the TechSmith Recording format.
Camtasia is used to capture video of a computer screen, often to demonstrate how a piece of software works; the CAMREC file format is how such videos are stored.
This file extension is unique to the Windows version of Camtasia; the Mac equivalent uses the .CMREC file extension, and it, too, has been replaced by the TREC format as of version 2.8.0.
This file format and related program are not related to the free CamStudio screen recording tool.
How to Open a CAMREC File
CAMREC files can be viewed and edited with the Camtasia application by TechSmith. You can double-click the file as well as use the program itself, via the File > Import > Media.. menu.
The program is also used to open current and legacy Camtasia Project files in the TSCPROJ and CAMPROJ formats.
If you don't have access to Camtasia, you can extract the recorded video from the CAMREC file. Just rename the file, changing the .CAMREC extension to .ZIP. Open that new ZIP file with a free file extraction tool like 7-Zip or PeaZip.
You can also just right-click the CAMREC file and choose to open it as an archive in one of those programs, and then pull the video out that way. However, you have to have the program installed and context menu options enabled in order for that to work.
You'll find several files inside, including Screen_Stream.avi - this is the actual screen recording file in the AVI format. Extract that file and open or convert it however you wish. See What Is an AVI File for more information.
The other files inside the CAMREC archive might include some ICO images, DAT files, and a CAMXML file.
If you find that an application on your PC does try to open the CAMREC file but it's the wrong application or if you would rather have another installed program open CAMREC files, see our How to Change the Default Program for a Specific File Extension guide for making that change in Windows.
How to Convert a CAMREC File
The Camtasia program can convert a CAMREC file to another video format like MP4. You can read how to do this at the TechSmith website.
The software can also convert CAMREC to the TREC format by importing the file into the most recent version of the program and then saving it to the newest, default format.
You can also convert a CAMREC file without Camtasia, using one of these free video converter tools. However, you have to first extract the AVI file from the CAMREC file because it's that AVI file that you have to put into one of those video converters.
Once the AVI has been imported into a video converter tool like Freemake Video Converter, you can convert the video to MP4, FLV, MKV, and several other video formats.
You can also convert the CAMREC file online with a website like FileZigZag. After you extract out the AVI file, upload it to FileZigZag and you'll have the option to convert it to a different video file format like MP4, MOV, WMV, FLV, MKV, and several others.
More Information on Camtasia File Formats
It might be a little confusing to see all the different new and old formats that the Camtasia program uses. Here are some brief explanations to clear things up:
- CAMREC is a screen recording file used on Windows
- CMREC is a screen recording file used on macOS
- TREC is the newest screen recording file format used on both Windows and macOS
- CAMPROJ is a Windows XML-based format that stores references to the media files used in the Camtasia project
- CMPROJ is a macOS file format that more resembles a folder because it actually holds all the media files, project settings, timeline settings, and other things related to the project
